Recently I was watching YouTube videos that caused me to be a little pessimistic about the fate of humanity. People hurting each other, outrageous acts perpetrated against innocent victims in the name of “humor”, Christians bashing Christians, Muslims bashing Muslims, Christians bashing Muslims, Muslims bashing Christians, Atheists bashing … well, everyone and anyone and Non-denominational bashing. People hating on each other, the government, the planet, it’s inhabitants. It’s depressing sometimes.
So I wondered if there is actually anything good going on in the world of YouTube. So I went in search of channels that seemed to be about something other then themselves. I found well over a hundred and I’m not done yet.
Over the course of a few days I was inspired, challenged, cried, raged, put my head in my heads in both despair at man’s inhumanity to man and man’s ability to reach out to his fellow man.
Over the course of some time I hope to put together more of a structured list, groupings, etc. Maybe even highlight a few for you by checking out their websites.
Now, my criteria were very simple. I looked for channels that were active (someone had recently logged in, videos had been recently posted) and channels that seemed to be promoting something good or working for something good in the world. I didn’t have a chance to go to each and every organization web page, review their organization and its practices and make a value judgment about the group. I just list them here.
There are groups for all over the world, all over the U.S. and covering a wide range of issues. If you look over the list you’ll probably find something you can get behind, get involved in and support and possibly make a difference in the world.

From gay rights to global warming, the jury-selected collection represents the work of a diverse group of independent filmmakers, many of whom are under 21. The films are equally diverse in style and content, with documentaries, music videos, animations, experimental work and everything else in between. What all the films have in common is that they spark debate and action in 12 minutes or less.
Every June, Media That Matters presents a new collection of twelve shorts. The festival launches in New York City with a World Premiere at the IFC Center and an Awards Ceremony at HBO where every filmmaker is honored and many receive cash awards sponsored by major foundations and corporations. Previous presenters include Tim Robbins, Al Franken, David Cross, Woody Harrelson, Barbara Kopple and Peter Yarrow. The festival launch also includes the Media in Action Workshop, a unique convening of filmmakers, educators, activists, nonprofits and youth, hosted by the International Center for Tolerance Education in Dumbo, Brooklyn.
The June launch events are just the beginning of a jam-packed year of Media That Matters. Channel 19 features the work of 12 ‘Community Video Units’ (CVU) in India. Each CVU has a handful of Producers who produce 30-minute ‘Video News Magazines” on a regular basis and screen them on widescreen projectors to thousands of people a month in the slums and villages. The Producers aim is to get their communities talking about the critical issues that the mainstream media ignores—like health, education and employment. ENOUGH NEEDS YOUR HELP. A deadly war is raging in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, and our insatiable demand for electronics products such as cell phones and laptops is helping drive that conflict.
Eastern Congo is the most dangerous place in the world to be a woman or girl, and the sexual violence there is often fueled by militias warring over conflict minerals, the ores that produce tin, tungsten, and tantalum—the 3 Ts— that end up being used in our electronic devices.
Thirty contestants have posted videos which raise awareness about the link between our cell phones and the violence in Congo. Now our judges, Oscar-nominated actor Ryan Gosling, actress Sonya Walger from ABC’s “Lost,” and Oscar-nominated director Wim Wenders, have selected the best three and it is your turn to vote for who you think should be the winner. Voting ends September 8 and the winner is announced the next day.
The creator of the winning video will be flown to Los Angeles (from within the United States), where the video will be screened at the first-ever human rights symposium during the Hollywood Film Festival (www.hollywoodfestival.com) on October 24 at the ArcLight Cinemas in Hollywood. The winning video will also be featured on the Enough Project’s websites and YouTube’s contest page.

About Me: I am a 16 year old diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome at 12. I was diagnosed with all the symptoms when I was about 1 and a half(Asperger’s Syndrome was hardly diagnosed until 1994 and still was unheard of by most doctors. What are you going to do?) After learning I had the disorder, I began to fight it and try to do everything that it would stop me from doing. I don’t want to rid myself of it, however, as it has helped me. Without it, I would have never have wanted to become a future child psychiatrist. I hope to help(not cure) and treat as many autistic children as I can.
